A Mountain Equipment Guide to Caring for your Waterproofs
Waterproof clothing is essential for staying protected and comfortable in the outdoors — but it won’t take care of itself. Whether you’re hiking, climbing or trail running in wet weather, your shell jacket and overtrousers need regular care to keep them performing at their best.
At Mountain Equipment, we’ve been building high-performance waterproofs for over 45 years. Our jackets are designed to withstand the harshest mountain conditions, but proper maintenance is essential to ensure they go the distance.
Here’s our expert guide to washing, drying, and reproofing your waterproof gear to keep it working like new for longer.

Why Looking After Your Waterproof Matters
Dirt, sweat and oils from your skin can affect the breathability and water repellency of your jacket over time. Rain may stop beading on the surface and start soaking in, leaving you damp and uncomfortable.
Caring for your waterproof isn’t just about staying dry — it’s about maintaining performance, extending its life, and reducing waste. Sustainability starts with making your gear last.
“A well-looked-after waterproof will perform better and last longer,” says the Mountain Equipment product team. “It’s a small routine that makes a big difference — for your comfort and the planet.”

Step-by-Step: How to Care for Your Waterproof Jacket or Overtrousers
1. Prepare for Washing
● Close all zips — including main, pocket and pit zips.
● Fasten cuffs, flaps, and any Velcro tabs.
● Shake or brush off excess dirt.
ㅤ
2. Machine Wash Gently
● Use a delicate cycle at 30–40°C, as indicated on the care label.
● Add a small amount of specialist cleaner, such as Grangers Performance Wash.
● Rinse twice and avoid high spin cycles.
Important: Avoid using detergents, fabric softeners, stain removers or bleach — they can all damage waterproof fabrics and reduce their performance.
ㅤ
3. Drying Matters
● Tumble dry on low heat for 20 minutes to reactivate the water-repellent finish.
● No dryer? Iron on a gentle setting (no steam), using a towel between the garment and the iron.
ㅤ
4. Retreat to Restore Water Repellency
If water stops beading on the surface after washing, it’s time to retreat your jacket.
● Use a product like Grangers Performance Repel Plus, available in spray-on and wash-in formulas.
● After applying, activate the treatment with heat — either tumble dry for 20 minutes or iron gently with a towel.
ㅤ
“Don’t wait for your jacket to soak through,” the Mountain Equipment product team advises. “Regular cleaning and retreating help maintain high performance — especially in wet, changeable conditions.”

Caring for the Latest Technologies
Mountain Equipment waterproofs use industry-leading materials, including:
● GORE-TEX® and next-gen GORE-TEX® ePE – Waterproof, windproof and breathable. GORE-TEX® ePE is a PFAS-free membrane with a reduced carbon footprint.
● DRILITE® – Our exclusive waterproof fabric range, designed for lightweight protection and long-term durability.
ㅤ
Even the best fabrics need care. Regular washing and retreating keeps them performing as designed — whether you’re summiting peaks or out on the school run.
ㅤ
Storage Tips
● Always dry your jacket thoroughly after use.
● Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
● Keep zips clean and occasionally lubricate them with a suitable product.
