REVIEW: ASICS Metaspeed Sky+

The ASICS Metaspeed Sky+ racing shoes are designed for stride-style runners who are looking to start fast and finish faster. Runners wearing these shoes will be able to take longer strides while conserving energy with each step. ​Thanks to an energetic midsole foam and a propulsive carbon plate, runners wearing these shoes will be able to conserve more energy while maintaining their pace at the later stages of the race.​

Introducing the latest version of the ASICS Metaspeed Sky, the new Metaspeed Sky+. Although very similar to its predecessor, the Sky+ favours the stride runner.

So, exactly what's changed from the 1st generation?

The main difference between the two styles is the placement of the Carbon Plate. Sports scientists found that the athletes running economy increased considerably compared to other race models and naturally enhanced the runner’s form. Some sources state it can save up to 5seconds per km.

The MetaSpeed Sky+ has 4% more lightweight FF BLAST TURBO. This increase has been added to the midsole allowing runners to generate more bounce and therefore extend their stride length.

Carbon Placements:

In the MetaSpeed Sky+, the mild toe spring curve is higher due to the fact that stride runners have a stronger downward push during toe-off and the higher plate placement allows them to compress more volume of foam to gain a higher bounce.

The inclusion of the rubber outsole material should in theory improve the grip and provides better durability.

My first impressions of the shoe were extremely positive. They felt weightless, comfortable, and most importantly FAST. It is incredible just how much easier running a tempo session is wearing these shoes. The sizing is true to size, unlike the previous model (which is a relief).

The first time I got to try these was at the ASICS 5K META Time Trials in Malaga. I wasn't in peak race condition having come off the back of Marathon training only 3 weeks before, but I decided to join the mass event for a runout. I was surprised just how easy running sub 4:00min per km felt. I am not going to lie, I felt like I was cheating.

One thing to be cautious off when ordering is that ASICS states that the METASPEED+ Series are unisex, and therefore are unisex sizing. This may have changed now but check before ordering.

If you want to run fast, break your personal best times, and truly test your capability then these are a must-buy.
