Finding the right Marathon Training Apparel
Marathon training is hard, tough work and the most important thing you can ask of your training apparel is that it allows you to run and log those big miles comfortably and distraction-free. Chaffing, rubbing and fabrics that cling on to sweat are out – and instead you should be looking for light, breathable training wear that lets you focus on your running. Here’s everything you’ll need for training and the big day.
ㅤ
TECHNICAL RUNNING TOP
This should be light and breathable and constructed from technical wicking fabric that allows sweat to evaporate from your skin. Remember the rule for all marathoners – anything that can chafe, will chafe. That means your running top should also have an ergonomic fit and ideally either flatlocked seams or completely seam-free to prevent rubbing and irritation. For cooler training days you can opt for a long sleeve baselayer and when the temperature rises a T-shirt or vest. Many runners prefer to opt for a vest on race-day for optimum cooling.

ㅤ
BREATHABLE, LIGHTWEIGHT RUNNING SHORTS
These should be as lightweight and breathable as possible. 2 in 1 shorts with a supportive inner layer are a great option for supporting tired muscles. Also look for secure pockets to carry your phone, gels and other essentials while you run.
ㅤ
SUPPORTIVE RUNNING TIGHTS OR CAPRIS
Ideal for training in cooler temperatures, running tights also have the added benefit of supporting the muscles. They should be light, form fitting and breathable, with added ventilation or mesh in key heat areas such as behind the knees. Compression tights are also a great option for marathon training, in compressing and promoting blood flow to the muscles, helping to boost performance and recovery.
ㅤ
ㅤ
TECHNICAL TRAINING SOCKS
If any part of your body is going to suffer during those long miles it’s your feet. Blisters are often a given in marathon training but there are measures you can take to help protect your feet. This is where running-specific socks really come into their own. Look for lightweight socks constructed from wicking fabric that won’t cling onto sweat and help prevent rubbing and irritation. Some socks also feature extra padding at the toe and heel and extra arch support at the mid-foot.
ㅤ
LIGHTWEIGHT RUN JACKET
If you’re training for Spring marathon in inclement weather conditions, this really is a must-have on those blustery, showery training days to give you a little extra protection from the elements. This should be breathable and resistant to light showers, but also lightweight and with an anatomical fit that allows you to move as freely as possible.
