REVIEW: SCARPA Spin ST

With a history spanning almost a century, SCARPA are best known as the masters of mountain boots. Most famous in Italy and central Europe, their extensive range of performance footwear has established them as a superior quality brand. An evolution in design has since led them to extending their range of products to trail running shoes, driven by passion and commitment to achieving new goals and peaks. And I can say, with absolute confidence, that the new SCARPA Spin ST is certainly a shoe worthy of celebration and praise. Let me explain why.

Despite their rich history, SCARPA are relative newcomers to the trail running scene, but it's clear to see that their vast experience of designing quality footwear has allowed them to hit the ground running (excuse the pun). The Spin ST is the latest addition to their trail range and unlike most other shoes on the market, it's specifically designed to excel in the soft and muddy conditions of the UK. As an experienced fell runner, this makes me very happy indeed.

Breathable Mesh Upper and New Block System adjustable lace lock system

Starting at the top, the Spin STs utilise an abrasive-resistant mesh upper, to provide outstanding levels of comfort and protection. Flexible properties mean that feet can flex and relax comfortably within the shoes, allowing you to twist and turn on technical off-road surfaces with ease and without discomfort. This mesh material has high-wearing properties for durability and is breathable, promoting airflow and allowing the shoes to drain effectively when saturated. The shoes have TPU overlays to provide you with protection and shielding in high-wearing areas, which also keeps feet well protected.

One of my favourite features is the soft, protective collar which provides comfort, ensuring that irritation or abrasion is prevented against your ankles and it also helps to stop debris from entering the shoe. After speaking to friends who have also worn the Spin ST, another benefit is that this design is perfectly suited to anyone who has, or has had, trouble with their Achilles. This is because the sock-like fit helps to prevent irritation and pressure at the heel. Working alongside this, the shoes have a New Block System adjustable lace lock system, providing a customisable, secure fit and preventing in-shoe slipping from occurring. This unique design is a revelation - it maintains lace tension, locks your feet securely in place during exercise and also allows you to neatly store any excess lacing inside a small pocket/pouch.

EVA Midsole

A compressed EVA platform provides lightweight and responsive cushioning. Generous, soft and durable, it spares your joints whenever you switch from sift ground to strike down on hard, unforgiving surfaces. Exceptionally lightweight, the EVA ensures long-lasting cushioning to keep you comfortable on long-distance days and is extremely firm, to absorb shocks instantly and effectively. Finally, to further modulate and provide shock absorption, the shoes have a TPU insert.

Fixion ST Outsole with 7mm lugs

Designed to ensure undeniable traction and grip on varying surfaces, the shoes have a Fixion ST outsole. Fixion ST is made of Vibram Megagrip compound with Traction Lug technology to offer maximum traction and braking allowing you to remain in control. The outsoles are durable and reliable to ensure you feel confident underfoot from start to finish of your run.

The USP of this shoe is the aggressive 7mm lugs that adorn the shoe's outsole. Perfect for tackling soft and muddy ground, the Spin ST is one of the few shoes on the market to feature a lug of this depth. If you are a fell runner or a trail runner who often runs on soft terrain, then this shoe is the ideal choice for both training and racing, as it's light enough for competition and will provide the ultimate grip, no matter how extreme the conditions.
