Net Mesh Upper
The upper of the Jackal is constructed from a net mesh that encases each foot in breathable comfort. The mesh allows air to fully permeate the entire upper, providing a constant supply of fresh, cool air while simultaneously forcing out hot muggy air. An updated highly abrasion-resistant upper will prevent any damage from being caused to the upper, which will allow you to push yourself harder, safe in the knowledge that you won't cause damage to the shoes. The mesh also boasts reinforcements in abrasion-resistant microfiber technology to prevent roots, rocks and stones from getting into the shoes. Additionally, the upper features a protective TPU toe cap that protects the front of the foot against trail hazards such as rocks and roots. The shoe offers a breathable, antiskid mesh lining that enhances ventilation and prevents in shoe slipping from occurring when on unpredictable terrain. The lacing sees the loops incorporated directly into the side panels of the uppers: a solution that facilitates the adaptation of volumes during long distance runs in which the foot tends to swell.
EVA Midsole
The midsole on the Jackal is designed to provide the perfect balance of fluidity, stability and flexibility. Towards the bottom of the midsole, the EVA is extremely firm and will absorb shocks instantly. This will prevent them from reaching the sole of the foot, and it will also improve the stability of the shoe by spreading the energy evenly. The EVA towards the top of the midsole softer, which will provide underfoot cushioning. Infinitoo Technology has also been used within the midsole to provides cushioning, stability and shock absorption. The front element increases the cushioning, the rear insert contributes to the stabilization of the run. The midsole also incorporates a high-density EVA Rock-Shield for a more stable run with rock-guard effect. Completing the midsole is an ortholite ergonomic footbed which provides ample underfoot cushioning and increased moisture management so you can go further for longer in complete comfort.
Frixion Red Outsole
Grip and traction is provided by the Frixion Red outsole. This will guarantee that you have supreme hold on uneven ground, as the outsole is able to create a strong link between shoe and ground. The rubber is also extremely durable, which will improve the longevity and functionality of the outsole. The dual mix compound delivers a perfect combination of grip, long lasting wear and shock absorption. An aggressive lug design will dig into wet ground, which will anchor the feet in place securely, which will give you more confidence when the ground becomes more uncertain. Fitted with an Impact Brake System, the outsole will assist with technical descents, which will relax you as you head down the hills.
Shoe Review
As worn and recommended by ultra-runners John Kelly and Sabrina Verjee, the La Sportiva Jackal is a fantastic all-round performer. Impressing in every category, the Jackal comfortably handles all types of off-road terrain and is suitable for any distance. Despite being a wide fit, I found them to be very comfortable to wear. This is mostly thanks to the design of the tongue and lacing system, both allowing the shoe to fit snugly and securely over my feet, locking them in place for added stability during exercise on uneven surfaces. This padded tongue is attached to the uppers by means of an in-built gaiter, which also helps to repel dirt and debris. In my opinion, it is the shape, size and width of the tongue that makes this design work so effectively. The uppers are almost seamlessly bonded together and built to last. The toe-bumper provides tons of protection and the built-in rock plate in the midsole ensures ultimate underfoot protection.
I was also impressed with the quality and performance of the grip. The multi-directional 3mm lugs can confidently handle all kinds of hard-packed trails, in both wet and dry conditions. It's safe to say that the all-round performance of the La Sportiva Jackal has helped to cement its place in my list of top-ten recommended trail shoes for 2020. In terms of sizing, I opted for a UK 10.5 and found them to be a perfect fit. Therefore, I would recommend opting for half a size bigger than normal.
