Using Hydrogel Technology to encapsulate bicarb and make high doses tolerable for athletes, the Maurten Bicarb System does for bicarbonate what Maurten Gel 100 and Drink Mixes do for carbohydrates. Lactate is not the enemy - it's a fuel source generated during all-out, intense anaerobic exercise. It's the increase in acidity during these efforts that overwhelms the muscles and leads to exhaustion. Large doses of sodium bicarbonate counteract the negative effects of the rising acidity, but there's always been a catch - stomach issues that cancel out any performance gains. Is Maurten Bicarb for me?

Bicarbonate can be used in training and competition for sports that require intermittent or constant intensity near or above anaerobic threshold, such as cycling, middle-distance running, rowing, swimming, team sports, and combat sports. It can also be used in threshold (interval) training for all types of endurance sports to help promote adaptations. Although some athletes have anecdotally reported positive results, the use of bicarbonate during prolonged steady-state endurance events, like marathons or long-distance triathlons, is still an area of research.

What serving size do I need?

The Bicarb System from Maurten comes in different serving sizes - 12, 15, 19, 22 and 25. By assessing the weight and bicarbonate experience of athletes, the right serving can be determined. Generally, the higher the weight, the bigger the serving size but without experience more doesn't necessarily mean better as it is important to train your guts first.

As with all serving sizes mentioned above, the Maurten Bicarb System 25 comes with three components;

Component A - Bowl.

Component B - Hydrogel.

Component C - Bicarbonate.

Firstly, the Maurten Bicarb System bowl has been designed for accurate and optimal mixing and serving thanks to clear instructions printed on the sides. It is also sized for single-hand-holding and features a screw-top lid for easy travelling and storage. Component B - history in the making. This Hydrogel component draws on Maurten's years of extensive research to provide you with a specially formulated Hydrogel that encapsulates and protects the sodium bicarbonate from stomach acid, allowing for easy swallowing without chewing. Each serving contains 40g of carbs which help athletes to pre-fuel their race or session. Lastly, Bicarbonate (Component C) contains groundbreaking mini bicarb tablets that have been designed to offer far greater control. A slower release of bicarbonate in the intestine reduces stomach issues and lengthens the duration of the bicarb effect.

Maurten Bicarb Digital System

Preparation is key and getting bicarbonate right requires forward thinking with the optimal timeframe for a Bicarb System dose being 1-2 hours after a meal, such as breakfast, and 1.5-2 hours before starting high-intensity training or competition. This is to allow enough time for the mini bicarbonate tablets to reach the intestine and be absorbed. Each Maurten Bicarb System includes a QR code that unlocks the Bicarb Digital System. This Digital System has been created by Maurten's in-house nutritional scientists to make it intuitive to plan, prepare and execute a bicarb session or race to virtually provide you with a personal bicarb nutritionist.

How

Open the bowl (A) and fill to the line with 200ml of water. Pour in the Hydrogel (B), replace the lid, and shake vigorously to mix. Leave for 5 minutes. Open the bowl and pour in the Bicarbonate (C). Gently mix with a spoon until evenly distributed through the Hydrogel. Consume immediately. Do not chew the mini tablets.
