Salomon S/LAB X Alpine Modular Trail Running Shoes
With no compromises between lightness, rigidity and protection, this disruptive S/LAB innovation is ideal for trail runners who like to go higher. This new concept includes both the S/LAB Sense 8 Trail Running Shoes and Alpine Modular Skin. Use the lightweight S/LAB Sense 8 for the runnable parts of your journey and the S/LAB ALPINE SKIN when terrain becomes more technical to scramble. Compatible with manual and semi-automatic crampons.
Uppers
Designed to provide a smooth, glove-like fit and feel, the upper of the Salomon S/LAB Sense 8 Trail Running Shoes has been constructed using a single layer welded upper. The single-layer mesh ensures enhanced breathability whilst remaining as lightweight as possible. Perforations within the fabric create a perfect microclimate for your feet to thrive in; the mesh allows cool air to flow into the shoe whilst, at the same time allows hot humid air to escape so you can remain cool, dry and comfortable at all times. The mesh has also been treated with a water-repellent material which ensures your feet will be kept dry on damp days; the quick-drying mesh also ensures a quick turn around during heavier rainstorms. Furthermore, a knitted elasticated sock has been directly integrated into the upper to ensure protection from loose debris and rocks. The sock acts like a gaiter to ensure debris cannot enter inside the shoe, this ensures you can continue distraction-free. As well as this, a rigidified toe cap and arch add an extra layer of protection to reduce the risk of injury when running though rocky trails plus, a layer of extra cushioning under the front of the foot increases comfort. The upper also features opening which facilitates water evacuation, this is ideal for wetter days when you're likely to be running through puddles or streams. A Sensifit system cradles the foot providing a precise and secure fit; located on the top of the upper it provides a secure, snug and virtually customised fit all around the foot. Completing the upper is a Quick Lacing System which provides a minimalistic and strong lace for a one-pull tightening ensuring you get the shoes on and off with minimal effort. A lace pocket is useful as it allows the laces to be stowed away making sure the laces do not get caught or snagged on any sticks or bushes out on the trail, reducing distractions. When the terrain becomes more technical to scramble, the S/LAB Alpine Modular skin can be used over the top of the Sense 8. The upper of the S/LAB Alpine Modular is made from an abrasion-resistant TPU material. This will stand up against abuse over time from forces placed against it, keeping both the shoe and feet within protected. The material is especially good at standing up against environmental factors to limit wear. For protection in the forefoot, there is a protective toecap which will surround the toe area to protect it from any bumps or knocks that you might receive when out running. Similarly, the heel is held in a firm and upright position to prevent injuries being caused there. By preventing mud and dirt from clinging onto the shoe, this will keep your feet feeling lightweight and distraction-free. The fit of the upper of the S/LAB X Alpine is vitally important for control, and a number of features will make sure that it does fit comfortably. A medial zip will allow you to easily remove or put on the shoe before securely fastening it tightly for a comfortable fit. Across the top of the foot, there is a velcro strap, which will hold the foot in to place comfortably and securely. It will also feel personalised and non-restrictive to you. An adjustable heel strap will make sure that the rearfoot won't feel uncomfortable, and can be adjusted for a comfortable and secure fit. The shoe has an integrated gaiter that is designed to keep debris out of your shoes, as well as adding protection against the elements. This comes with a zipped, protective cuff that wraps around the top of the shoe and the ankle, preventing water, snow, rocks and sand from entering and causing discomfort. A membrane within the shoe with an additional layer of material will provide insulation.
Midsoles
Within the midsole, the Salomon S/LAB Sense 8 Trail Running Shoe has injected and compressed EVA which forms the EnergyCell Midsole. This multi-functional midsole will provide both comfort and protection, as it has dual-density EVA. Towards the bottom, the EVA is extremely firm, which will absorb shocks instantly and effectively, preventing them from causing any damage to the sole of the foot. The energy produced from this will also be returned as rebound, which will give you an added spring in your step. The higher you get in the midsole, the EVA becomes less densely packed, which will make every step feel comfortable. The midsole ensures your feet are protected against unpredictable and rocky terrain as you move through the trails. In the S/LAB Alpine Modular, for additional comfort, an Ortholite sockliner is used to create a cooler, drier, healthier and better-cushioned environment under the foot. This material will not break down or lose effectiveness over time. The Carbon Chassis is a platform design that prevents the foot from wobbling laterally or medially while traversing the topography. It basically keeps the mid-sole firm in that respect, but it doesn't limit the flexibility of the sole unit itself. Runners can still appreciate natural movement, especially when gearing towards the toe-off.
Outsoles
Ensuring all-terrain grip, the outsole of the Salomon S/LAB Sense 8 as well as the S/LAB Alpine Modular Skin has been constructed using Contagrip MA. The full rubber outsole provides premium traction on loose terrain ensuring a solid bond between you and the ground. The Contagrip outsole is built for the widest variety of surfaces; it ensures confidence on wet, dry, hard or loose surfaces whilst still offering long-term durability so you can go further for longer with complete confidence in your footwear. As well as this, the outsole also features multidirectional lugs which dig deep into the ground when braking or changing direction. The deep lugs are able to anchor the foot into wet and muddy ground, securing you into place whilst also forming a solid base to push off from. The forefoot section has a Climbing Zone, where the rubber compound is slightly thicker and the gripping lugs are slightly more aggressive. This section facilitates better climbing mechanics and surface control, delivering traction whenever it is needed. With the use of multi-directional gripping lugs, it allows the shoe to hold onto different types of surfaces with ease, even on wet surfaces, preventing slippage.
