REVIEW: ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 24

The ASICS Gel-Nimbus 24 shoe offers advanced impact protection for your distance training. Creating a softer landing in every step, this shoe is also 10g lighter than the previous version. The upper's soft engineered mesh and flexible midfoot panel make these shoes more comfortable during long runs. By moving seamlessly with your foot, they help your stride feel smoother in every step.

I’ve been wearing ASICS Gel-Nimbus since the day I first slipped my feet into a pair of running shoes. Over the years, I've stayed loyal to both the brand and the model, because it's always been a trusted and reliable choice. It also happens to be a lovely looking shoe and is available in a wide range of colours, two of the many reasons the Gel-Nimbus first caught my attention.

In comparison to other similar models of the market, it is quite a robust shoe. The upper material is hard-wearing and you can tell from the outset that it is going to be quite a snug and comfortable fit. Over the years of wearing the Gel-Nimbus, I've noticed that it has vastly improved in terms of flexibility. Earlier models were much less flexible and certainly not as breathable, but with this latest release, much has been improved. The material is thinner, a lot more breathable and in my opinion, one of the best cushioned running shoes on the market.

One of the main reasons I choose to wear the Gel-Nimbus is that it's an extremely comfortable shoe. You can tell that a lot of thought and research has been conducted into making this a really comfortable and enjoyable ride. There is a layer of thick engineered mesh covering the upper part of the shoe which helps to provide extra comfort for longer distances, although this does make the shoe less breathable. The 24 is also a much lighter shoe than its predecessor. In contrast to the rest of the shoe, it has a stretchy and very flexible tongue and midfoot sleeve, which helps it to fit nicely around your foot and provide a snug and secure feeling when running.

The redesigned midsole is made of Flytefoam Blast, which is different to previous versions of the Gel-Nimbus. The thick material and geometry give this shoe a vast amount of cushioning which in turn make it feel super-soft and really comfortable to wear. The thick upper mesh also helps to make it much more durable.

Forefoot stack is 16mm and rearfoot stack is 26mm. To put this in perspective, it has a much lower stack height than a comparable shoe like the adidas Ultraboost, which has a forefoot stack of 21mm and a rearfoot stack of 31mm.

This new design of the Gel-Nimbus gives it a much faster feel than previous versions. When I say fast, it’s not comparable to a lightweight carbon super-shoe, but it feels much faster than previous versions and especially for a highly cushioned longer-distance training shoe.

The gel helps to prevent the foot from sinking into the heel and doesn’t act as cushioning, which mainly comes from the foam. The sole of the shoe is grippy and gives great traction on both wet and dry surfaces. It takes a lot of mileage for the outsole to start showing signs of wear and tear.

OVERALL

The shoe is great for those easy and steady longer runs but can also be used for shorter, faster training runs, due the lighter and bouncier feel than previous versions. I personally use it as my workhorse shoe because it gives me most satisfaction on long steady runs and my short recovery runs after those hard training days. There is nothing more I enjoy than putting this shoe on whilst heading out with a tired body and mind because I know my legs are safe in these comfortable highly cushioned and durable shoes.
