REVIEW: adidas Terrex Agravic Flow 2.0 GTX

The adidas Terrex Agravic Flow 2 GTX Trail Running Shoes are athlete-proven, designed to elevate your mountain game with advanced tech you feel in every step you take. Featuring newly engineered mesh upper for even more comfort and breathability, plus rock protection and stability through a full length promoderation foil. 

Wet, muddy trails are part of the experience, but wet feet don't need to be. Enjoy dry feet and a superlight feel as you move from road to trail and back in these adidas trail running shoes. A breathable GORE-TEX membrane seals out wet conditions while ultralight Lightstrike EVA foam cushioning encourages speed and agility over rough terrain. The Continental outsole brings the grip you need for different terrains.

Like every model in the adidas TERREX trail running range, this shoe is not short of good-looks. Available in two different colourways from core black to lime green, the Agravic Flow 2 is certainly eye-catching in design. First impressions based on look and feel indicate this shoe is well-built and specifically designed to handle tough terrain, traits consistent with all previous Agravic models. Once again, adidas have partnered with a professional athlete for expert advice to help them create this exciting new shoe, having previously worked with Tom Evans and Ekaterina Mityaeva on the testing and development of the Terrex Speed Ultra and the Agravic Ultra. For this latest addition to the Agravic family, it was the turn of Abby Hall, one of the best athletes in the ultra-trail running business and on board to provide her insight and influence.

Fans of the adidas Terrex Agravic Ultra will love this latest addition to the Agravic family, because they’re almost identical in terms of fit, comfort and performance. Lightstrike EVA foam in the midsole provides ample cushioning, but it’s not the soft and squidgy kind. Although you won’t feel like you’re stepping on fluffy clouds, you will feel like you’re wearing a shoe that is both dynamic and responsive, giving you an extra spring in each stride.

If stability, support and protection are the key priorities you look for in a trail shoe, then you won’t be left disappointed – the Agravic Flow 2 has all of these qualities in abundance. With an abrasion-resistant engineered mesh upper and waterproof GORE-TEX lining, this shoe is extremely robust, hard wearing and built to handle the toughest terrain. So much so that they need ‘breaking in’ and will feel much stiffer compared to other similar trail shoes on the market. I had the same experience with the Agravic Ultra, but once worn in, you quickly adapt to the unique fit and feel. It is this solidness and build quality that provides high levels of stability and protection on technical and uneven terrain. The heel counter at the back of the shoe really holds your feet in place and the thick midsole with rock protection reduces heavy impact underfoot. There is also an additional layer of protective coating that wraps around the upper of the shoe, from heel to toe, complete with a solid toe bumper – just in case you kick any loose rocks by mistake. 

As this shoe is better suited to hard surfaces, it does making switching from road to trail an easier transition.

adidas claim that slick rocks and soggy trails won't slow you down when wearing these trail running shoes. I would partly agree with this statement. The Continental™ grip generally performs well on almost all off-road surfaces, but they would not be my first choice in extreme soft and muddy conditions. I see them as a seasonal model, perfectly suited to hard and rocky trails during the spring and summer months. Personally, I prefer the non-GTX version of this shoe because I would tend to wear it in warm and dry conditions, therefore opting for a more breathable upper.

With only 4mm lugs, Agravic Flow 2 is ideal for aggressive trails and tough technical terrain in countries like Spain, but certainly not suitable on the high fells in the UK during the bleak winter. For this, the adidas Terrex Speed Pro SG are a much better choice because they're super-lightweight, drain more easily and have a much deeper and aggressive lug pattern.

Alternatively, if you're looking for a lighter trail racing shoe for hard and rocky surfaces with plenty of cushioning, then the adidas Terrex Speed Ultra are certainly worth considering.

In terms of fit and feel (based on personal preference), I usually tend to opt for a slightly bigger size in adidas shoes (UK 10.5, as opposed to a UK 10).

The adidas Terrex Agravic Flow 2 GTX in summary;

• A trail shoe that offers high levels of support, protection and stability.

• Well-made and built to last, with an abrasion-resistant engineered mesh upper and waterproof GORE-TEX lining.

• Perfect for tough, rocky terrain and aggressive trails.

• Most suitable for long to ultra-distances. At 340g, this is not a lightweight racing shoe.

• Parley Ocean Plastics and recycled polyester is used for the upper.
