On the rare occasion we are treated to some dry weather in the North of England, I try to take my runs off the tarmac roads and onto some grassy trails. The softer ground is a welcome respite to inevitably tired legs and offers my joints a little more protection than pounding the concrete, day in, day out.
Finding the right shoe, however, has always been a struggle. Whilst I need the grippy sole of a trail shoe, I want that support and cushioning of a road shoe. A rare combination, it seems, in the world of trail shoes, especially in the era of increasing stack heights.
Nike Trail however, have hit the nail on the head (and prevented any more embarrassing ‘Bambi on Ice’ moments) with the Pegasus React 4 Trail Running Shoes. The perfect hybrid; combining the cushioning and support of a road shoe with the grip of a trail shoe. So, as I switch between the roads and the country, my run remains light and bouncy, with no need to slow the pace or chop my stride in fear of slipping.

I put the Pegasus React Trail 4 to the test with a brutal hill session up the fire tracks of Longridge Fell, a session I like to use to build strength and speed. A 3-mile grassy warm up, followed by 12x45second hill reps and a 3-mile cool down. The burning legs are inevitable with hill reps, but thanks to the Pegasus trail 4s, there was no slipping on the loose stones and my Achilles didn’t flare up due to pretty decent cushioning. The Pegasus’ lightweight nature was a true blessing as I started rep number 8 and the fatigue started to set in over the final stretch.
If you prioritise comfort over extreme grip in a trail shoe, I’d definitely go for the Nike Pegasus Trail 4. Probably not for the serious fell runners among you, or a shoe you’d choose if you’re wanting to tackle the wet muddy trails in winter. However, if it’s a mix of roads, towpaths and dry grassy trails you’re looking for these are the shoes I would recommend.
